Okkervil River @ Castle Clinton 7/13

I am thoroughly impressed by how smoothly things run over at River to River. It's amazing that with all the free shows they put on there never seems to any problems whatsoever. Last night was no different as I ventured into one of our National Parks to see the excellent Austin band Okkervil River. The only draw back to seeing a show in Castle Clinton is that there's no smoking inside that National Park.

The evening started with a quick history lesson from Ranger Joe (I think his name was Joe, but maybe I drank too much last night) giving a seven sentence synopsis of the history of Castle Clinton, like the fact that before Ellis Island, Castle Clinton served as the home for immigration.

Once Ranger Joe was done the band was introduced and came out jamming. I was a little shocked that people remained seated, but that only lasted two (of the slower) songs. When the band started picking it up, the crowd did too with a couple of people willing to dance in the aisle, including one extremely exhuberant fan who was jumping up and down for a good portion of the show.

As for the music, he set was more than an hour long and was filled with some older and more recent Okkervil River songs and even two solo songs by Will Sheff (including one great song about the President being dead). The band was tight despite not having played in some time (according to Will), and it sounded great in the open air courtyard of Castle Clinton.

All in all, it was a really fun show that was totally enhanced by the venue it was in. If you haven't gotten the chance to see a show there yet I highly, highly recommend seeing The Hold Steady there on July 27th (unfortunately I'll be in Chicago that day)! Finally, I'll post some links to my videos for you all to look at!!! (embedded players will be up later)

UPDATE: As usual Ryan over at ryspace.com has recordings of the show!!!

I was hesistant to head down because I knew wasn't able to get down there by 5. Did they fill to capacity??? Because I really want to hit up the Hold Steady show but don't want to go all the way downtown and get turned away.

i got there at 7:20 and walked right in and got a seat in the middle area...missed the first couple of songs, but it was a good time - good set.

Yeah I got there at around 6pm, and got a seat in the sixth row a to the left of the stage. It seemed like it was pretty easy to get in for people that showed up late or were meeting people. Though I'd expect it to be a bit more crowded for Hold Steady.

Ranger Jim....a classic cult hero if there ever was one. Hes been at the Castle every show for 10 years and he just gets better every time. I love to see him appreciated...

very cool, thank you for posting these. Haha, it's funny to see the back of my head below Will Sheff. It reminds me that I need a haircut.

as surprised as i was that people remained seated for as long as they did, i hate to say it, but we could all see much better when everyone was still sitting! that being said, it was still a great show, here are my pics and stuff.
