Bagels & Beer Band Profile: The Secret Life of Sofia

Who: The Secret Life of Sofia
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Slot: 1:30pm, Downstairs
Why You Should Skip Work To See Them: The Secret Life of Sofia are a band that you could probably see without earplugs. It's not that they don't crank up their instruments live it's just that the music never becomes abrasive enough to do any real damage to your ears. It's ethereal and calming, but it also has a way of rocking you that's just right. I know this band hails from Brooklyn and plays around town fairly often, but seriously this is the way you should spend your lunch break otherwise you will be seriously missing out!
5 Questions:
PTST: How do you guys prepare to play a show so early in the day? Is the
start time the one draw back to CMJ?
SLoS: It's not a drawback. We're always prepared: Steve will probably load up on eggs and bacon. Kyle will go for an intense jog. Chris will check the local traffic on his iPhone. Fraser and I will probably go to work in the morning and stare at the clock until about 15 minutes before show time.

PTST: What do you guys like about the CMJ Music Marathon? Anything you absolutely hate about it?
SLoS: The thing we like most about CMJ is all the hot chicks that come out to our shows. The ones in colorful tights and unitards. I don't think there's anything we absolutely hate about CMJ. It's pretty much a perfect system with no flaws that allows undiscovered bands to become exposed to the public and the music industry without being overshadowed by buzzy bands that already have labels, managers and publishing deals.

PTST: What does the band hope to accomplish by playing shows mostly for industry folk?
SLoS: We just want to play our music for new people. If they happen to be industry, then that's great. We'd love to work with them--our lawyer is always present in case of a surprise contract or business relationship. Seriously, though... if it's a few excited college kids that really love hearing new music, then maybe that's even better. When I was a freshman at NYU, that week in October was really amazing, and it opened my eyes to the kinds of music I could have been making.

PTST: Why should people skip work or school to come see you guys play on a Tuesday afternoon?
SLoS: Because we are a) really handsome, and b) really strange looking at the same time. This disconnect makes us very interesting to watch, and by the time people realize what's going on, they are sucked into the beautiful black hole that is our music.

PTST: Are you going to do anything differently for you CMJ shows or is it better to just go out there and play the songs you know well to the best of your ability?
SLoS: It's very likely that we'll debut a new song during CMJ. We'll also play the hits... gotta please the people. Though, it's good to mix things up and let a surprise loose now and again.

PTST: Are there any other bands you're looking forward to seeing during the week?
SLoS: Yes.
Other CMJ Shows: Sat. 10/25 @ The Delancey (StereoactiveNYC Showcase)
