When Bradford Cox' sophomore release as Atlas Sound leaked late last year the notoriously enigmatic musician almost gave up on the music business totally frustrated by what it had become. It seemed the internets that helped build him were slowly tearing him down. Luckily for all of his fans Cox re-worked Logos and made it a great leap forward from his debut record under the same moniker. Of course it doesn't quite compare to the size and scope of his full band Deerhunter, but it is great to listen to this sleepier, more intimate version of his music, and Logos has quickly become one of my most played records. The leak and re-working of the material also led to a full EP of additional material that is now available when you purchase the record straight from Rough Trade (right here). On the EP we get to hear different versions of "Criminals" and "Kid Klimax" as well as four other songs. All of these are as good as what we're hearing on Logos with the same sort of dreamy ambiance found on each track. It's exactly the same strategy Bradford took with the Deerhunter release last year, adding on the New Era Cont. EP on top of Microcastle and making it a far deeper record in the process. Logos would have been fantastic without the additional material, but with it along for the ride it becomes a record that just won't stop giving.
For now we are completely satisfied with the work Bradford Cox has given us in the past few years, all of it shows growth and deep skills that should not be ignored by any true music fan. But knowing Cox there will probably be some more releases posted on his blog and more mixes leaked out to the internet before long. But we'll stick to Logos and the Rough Trade EP for now!
